On Saturday, May 11, 2013, Campbell Soup Company will team up with Katy, TX area Letter Carriers (NALC) to collect food donations in order to provide assistance to the millions of Americans who are struggling with hunger.

“On any given month the Food Pantry gives out over 35,000 food items to 700 families in the KISD area. The Letter Carrier Food Drive comes at a critical time of the year by supplying items to help sustain the pantry during the summer months, when donations are at their lowest. Your support of both food items and personal care items are extremely important and appreciated.”

Bruce Kingwell, Director KCM Food Pantry

Beyond the Call of Duty…

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is a nationwide effort that provides food to local food banks and pantries that rely heavily on donations. With more than 50 million Americans living at risk of hunger, food banks across the country continue to experience record demand for emergency food assistance.

The nation’s 175,000 letter carriers will collect food donations left at the mailboxes of generous Americans in more than 10,000 communities and deliver them to food banks and other hunger relief organizations, such as pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.

Now in its 21st year, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, having collected more than one billion pounds of food since its inception in 1993. In 2012, generous Americans donated more than 70 million pounds of food, which marked the ninth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected.

Campbell Soup Company will kick off this year’s food drive with a donation of one million pounds of food to Feeding America member food banks.

Donations collected by local area mail carriers will go to benefit the KCM Food Pantry.

The Face of Hunger…

Despite the generosity of millions of Americans who have supported the letter carriers’ food drive in previous years, the need for food assistance still exists for millions of families. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual study measuring food security in the United States, more than 50 million Americans, including nearly 17 million children, are food insecure, meaning they live at risk of hunger.

You Can Help…

Helping Stamp Out Hunger in our city is as easy as checking your mailbox. Just leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox on Saturday, May 11. Your letter carrier will then pick up and deliver the food to a local food bank. Examples of non-perishable items include:

Peanut butter

Canned soup

Canned meats and fish

Canned vegetables, fruits and juices

Boxed goods (such as cereal)

Pasta and rice

For more information about the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive in Katy, ask your letter carrier, contact your local post office or visit either www.helpstampouthunger.com or www.facebook.com/StampOutHunger, and follow the drive at www.twitter.com/StampOutHunger.

Ending sexual assault requires changing societal attitudes, educating professionals and the community at large, and advocating for laws and policies that promote public safety and justice and healing for sexual assault survivors.

What can you do to help?

Ensuring survivor access to services requires resources critical in leveling the playing field. As a culture we need to be at least as concerned about the rights and resources of sexual assault victims as we are for the accused. By making a donation small or large you can help support our work to assure sexual assault victims have a voice. Five dollars may seem inconsequential given the magnitude of the work but when added to the contributions of others it truly can impact the problem. It is most important to us to know the multitudes of individuals who stand behind our goals. Please join us in this endeavor.

Compassion lies at the heart of this work but it is the collective will of individuals that propels change.

We appreciate your help!

They both have a common desire to help others and a willingness to give of themselves, investing their time, energy and emotions in an endeavor they believe is worthwhile.

This common desire is vested 365 days of the year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Volunteers are central to the success of KCM’s Crisis Center. It takes a strong heart and spirit to put yourself in the situation required of a crisis hotline volunteer. One must be prepared to give of themselves at any given moment.

Someone who knows that sacrifice is the heart of volunteering is Betty T. Betty is an on-call crisis center volunteer advocate who provides comprehensive services to victims of sexual assault by providing crisis intervention at two local hospitals. She accompanies survivors through the forensic examination and the entire process of dealing with law enforcement. She is vital in that she provides resources and support to victims through the immediate shock of their trauma.

Thank you Betty for all you do to serve our community in this vital role!

Marina a victim, now a survivor of family violence and incest by her father.

“I was a very happy child, very outgoing and had good grades! What people did not know is that I was being repeatedly raped by my own father. It would happen every time he felt like it, when my mom was not at home. This had been happening since I was 5 or 6 years old until I ran away from home at the age of 15. My father would threaten me by telling me that if I ever told anyone, he was going to hurt my mother.

I believed him until one time when I was 12 years old, I saw a very violent episode of my father about to stab my mom in front of me and my younger brother. I heard screaming, I yelled, and I saw blood. Me and my younger brother ran towards him and took the knife away.

Soon after, we left home and became homeless. Without my dad around anymore, I finally told my mom what he had done to me. She did not believe me and moved back in with my father instead. I felt betrayal, anger and isolated. He continued raping me. I left home again. Someone finally believed me and offered help by taking me to the police. A report was made and they said they would help me. When my dad found out that the police wanted to talk to him, he disappeared. He never got caught because he was running away from the police.

But, the police never gave up on me. At 20 years old, a detective came knocking on my door regarding my case. They didn’t give up on me! I gathered some information of how to find him and he got caught. He was arrested in another state, brought back to Texas and the trial began. He was sentenced to 15 years.

At 23 years old, already a mother of 3 children and happily married, my mother gave me a heartfelt and deep apology; this time, she listened. The truth is that I forgave my mother a long time ago.

The support group at KCM and counseling has helped me a lot, not only teaching me how to deal with my emotions from the past, but also how to communicate effectively with my husband and children. Thank you.”
