Social Services – Success Story

“Never in my life had I had to struggle, hurt… go without.

This past year everyone told me this was all in God’s plan and He would make something good out of the tragedy. I was listening… but not really believing.

God has blessed us with so many people in our path to help me get back up and moving forward for my children.

Thank you for your help and generosity! I am so thankful for every single one of you!”

Nancy – Social Services Client

Katy Christian Ministries Receives Keep Texas Beautiful Award

Katy Christian Ministries Community Garden(Katy, Texas) – Keep Texas Beautiful recently announced Katy Christian Ministries (KCM) Community Garden as a winner of the 2013 Keep Texas Beautiful, one of the awards it bestows to honor those who protect the Texas environment and support the organization’s mission to make Texas the cleanest, most beautiful state in the nation. The Keep Texas Beautiful Award recognizes a Civic Organization for a project that has been very successful.

Each year, Keep Texas Beautiful acknowledges deserving individuals, businesses, community groups, civic organizations, media, government entities and law enforcement officials for their commitment to an array of environmental issues, including litter prevention and community beautification, volunteerism, illegal dumping enforcement and education.

Katy Christian Ministries Food Pantry Director, Bruce Kingwell, was instrumental in taking the dream of a former director and envisioning a project of a large Community Garden on the property of Katy Christian Ministries on 5th Street in Katy. The KCM Community Garden is a one acre, forty bed, handicap accessible organic garden and orchard established to supplement the food provided for the individuals who are served through the KCM Food Pantry each year.  These gardens were all built and are maintained by volunteers and all food grown is donated to the food pantry onsite. The plantings started small but have grown to an annual harvest of 5,000 lbs of vegetables in 2012.  Created to provide healthy food choices for clients, the garden also provides recreational, therapeutic, volunteer, and educational opportunities for the community.

Award winners will be recognized at KTB’s 46th Annual Conference, held June 17-20 on the San Antonio River Walk. A full list of winners and award descriptions, as well as information about the conference can be found at www.ktb.org.

Keep Texas Beautiful, a statewide grassroots environmental and community improvement nonprofit, strives to educate and engage Texans to take responsibility for improving their community environment. KTB and its more than 360 affiliates work with government, businesses, civic groups, and volunteers to ensure that every Texan has the opportunity to make Texas the cleanest, most beautiful state in the nation.  For more information on programs and events, call 1-800-CLEAN-TX or visit www.ktb.org.

February 23rd 9:00 am – 3:00 pm – Youth in Philanthropy

YIP-Logo

Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) is in its 17th year of providing opportunities for high school students to learn the role volunteering and philanthropy play in building a better community for all.  YIP cultivates student leaders, letting students develop and test different skill sets while making a difference in their community by participating a countywide service project and six monthly workdays with area nonprofits.

On February 23rd on the Plaza at Sugar Land Town Square from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., approximately 145 students representing eighteen area high schools from Calvary College Prep, Fort Bend ISD, Lamar CISD, Needville ISD and Stafford MSD will be participating in a Healthy Children’s Countywide Food Drive to raise awareness of the need to replenish the healthy snacks supply of our local food pantries before summer arrives.  The students will encourage their campus peers, friends, neighbors and the community-at-large to join them in collecting non-perishable food to donate to East Fort Bend Human Needs, Rosenberg-Richmond Helping Hands, Katy Christian Ministries, Mamie George Community Center, and Second Mile Mission.

YIP does not happen without the support of many partners, and this year is no different.  Taking the lead with coordinating the logistics of this event is Si Environmental (Si Enviro), and we can also count on our long time partners: Sugar Land Town Square, Planned Community Developers, the Fort Bend Chamber, and the George Foundation.  However, we need your assistance to assure the success of the Healthy Children’s Countywide Food Drive. We invite you to join our efforts by filling at least one backpack with healthy snacks (the list is attached) to donate on Saturday, February 23rd.  We are hoping to fill the beds of two pickups with contributed backpacks filled with healthy snacks.

We encourage you to bring your donations to the event where you will meet the YIP students and they can have the opportunity to thank you.  If it is not possible to drop your backpack(s) off on Saturday, you may drop it off at one of three locations: Fort Bend Chamber (445 Commerce Green, Sugar Land, TX  77478); The George Foundation (215 Morton Street, Richmond, TX 77469); or Si Environmental (6410 Reading Road, Rosenberg, TX  77471).There will be many activities planned for the day, so we hope you will come out to celebrate with the YIP students on the 23rd.

With your help, we know the YIP students will have a successful event that will benefit many children throughout our community.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Steve Nordlander at 281-391-5261.

We promise you will have fun!
